Compaq Laptops

Compaq was born in America, in 1982, founded by Rod Canion, Jim Harris and Bill Murto. Even back then, in the 80's, the seeds of what would become Compaq laptops were being sown, with their Compaq Portable, which was more suitcase than laptop. Nevertheless, it proved portable computers were going to be popular items, and it was the direct ancestor of the current portfolio of Compaq laptops.

However, it was in the 90's that Compaq laptops really took off, with their Presario range. In fact, they were the first laptop computers to use AMD and Cyrix chips, meaning lower prices, which let Compaq laptops effectively price loads of others out of the market (most notably, IBM).

Nowadays, after Compaq's merger with HP, Compaq laptops are amongst the top echelon of portable PCs, sharing technology with HP's formidable range. And the Presario still remains one of the recognisable brand names on Compaq laptops.
