Unlimited data packages are a thing of the past because Orange, o2 and Vodafone are now abandoning the idea.
Service providers have offered unlimited data as a away to encourage consumers to purchase 3G smartphones and netbooks.
The plus point for the user was that they had access to the internet everywhere in the UK and could download as much as they wanted.
There's been an increase in the popularity of
laptops with mobile broadband and smartphones, this can be partly attributed to the attractive unlimited data packages.
BUT.. over the last month or so there seems to have been a bit of a U-turn.
Recently the Orange network announced that it was phasing out the term 'Unlimited' when referring to it's data packages. The truth is that unlimited was never unlimited in the first place. There was always a 30mb daily allowance!! And now they've decided to just offer 500MB, 1GB or 3GB monthly packages.
The Vodafone network have followed suit by forcibly switching their customers off the now defunct unlimited data package, then moved them to a 1GB a month package. Naturally there was a degree of outrage and Vodafone have since given their customers the option to cancel their contracts if they can prove that the change will have an adverse monetary affect on their bills.
Any customers on the o2 network hoping to renew their iPhone or netbook contacts may want to think twice. The reason being that the unlimited package on o2 is now a thing of the past. Now consumers must choose from 500MB a month to a maximum 1GB a month.
This is bad news for iPhone, netbook or iPad owners.
