Intel processor to increase ‘worldwide availability’ of top-of-the-range laptops
Expensive
laptops may be made more cost effective through a new ‘ultra-thin’ processing system, it’s claimed. At the launch of the Pentium SU2700, Intel’s new ultra-low voltage chip, the hardware manufacturer said laptops like the MacBook Air and Dell Adamo would be available to more users on a budget.
Uday Marty, Intel’s director of product marketing in the company’s Mobile Platforms Group, stated in a global webcast that ‘thin is finally in’ for laptop computers.
“Very thin, very light systems are going to be available worldwide to consumers at price points for you and me, and people we know.”
He added that when launched in the US, the SU2700 would be available in laptops costing between $499 (£303) and $1,200 (£729).
ASUS and MSI laptops to integrate chips
Marty said he expects laptops’ processing power to run between that of a standard laptop and high-end netbooks with the new chip.
Laptop manufacturers including ASUS and MSI are expected to bring out devices based on the processors later on this year.
The announcement also mentioned the release of three Core 2 Duo mobile processors for laptops; the T9900, P9700 and P8800. Intel is also bringing out a new GS40 Express mobile chipset for laptops.
