Laptops to replace PCs within 3 years

Laptops and smartphones will replace desktop computers within the next three years, according to a shock statement from one Google senior executive.

John Herlihy, boss of Google Europe, told a conference last week that desktop PCs were declining in popularity, insisting that devices such as laptops were replacing them as people's favourite way to work.

Alongside laptops, Herlihy said that smartphones were becoming the standard way to carry out research, adding that: "In three years' time, the desktop PC will be irrelevant."

The praise heaped on laptops and smartphones by Herlihy is perhaps indicative of his company's new focus: the mobile market.

Portable devices such as laptops have been highlighted by Google CEO Eric Schmidt as playing a big part in the future of consumer technology. And with the company developing a new operating system with laptops in mind – Chrome OS – it is little wonder that others in the organisation are towing the laptops line.
