Laptop users urged to check browser security

Security experts have warned laptop users to make sure that their web browsers are up to date after a spate of high-profile alerts.

Hackers in China recently exploited security flaws in Microsoft's Internet Explorer 6 to attack Google's data networks, causing tension between the state and the US search company.

Since the incident, a number of smaller-scale attacks on home laptops have been reported as more people become aware of the importance of internet security.

Most new laptops come equipped with the latest security software and later versions of the Internet Explorer browser, however there are still many people using IE6.

Some laptop users have been advised to switch over to Google Chrome, an ultra-secure alternative to Internet Explorer, as its speed and simple design mean it often runs better on notebooks, netbooks and laptops.

Another browser said to be adept at keeping laptops safe on the net is Firefox, which has been championed by security campaigners for many years.
