A new anti-theft feature has been released for laptops, which if activated, can turn a stolen laptop into 'a brick'.
The LoJack application from Absolute Software allows users to remotely lock a laptop if it has been stolen or misplaced. The application prevents the model from switching on, while also saving all data stored on the machine. This allows the owner to recover their files and personal information if the machine is recovered by authorities at a later date.
While previous security measures have allowed users to remotely wipe the data on a stolen laptop, the LoJack application gives owners the prospect of recovering data.
A spokesperson from Absolute Software said that the new software would offer peace-of-mind for those who had been the victim of laptop theft. He said:
"Many consumers don't back up data on a frequent basis so when we wipe data it is gone for good. Losing a laptop is like losing a wallet."
