An ambitious government plan to provide free laptops to low-income households has been welcomed by BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT.
The initiative, which pledges 270,000 free laptops to those families without current access to a computer, has been described as a "real benefit" by the group.
Ian Ryder, deputy chief executive for the institute, said the scheme would give a number of low-income families the opportunity to access services and resources which are only available online.
"We applaud the government's efforts to do this through this [free laptops] scheme," he said. "Ensuring families are equipped and able to get online is a necessary but difficult step at a national level."
The free laptops project was launched as part of the government's Digital Britain initiative. It is believed that over £12 million has been allocated for marketing the scheme.
