Free laptops are being handed out in the UK as part of a plan to distribute 270,000 machines to families across the country.
The free laptops scheme was first announced by Gordon Brown at the 2008 Labour Party Conference in Manchester, with the aim of bridging the gap in achievement between rich and poor homes.
The plan, which has a budget of £300million, has already seen free laptops given out in two pilot areas and is now being rolled out nationwide.
A recent study suggested that the free laptops could help school children improve their GCSE results by as much as two grades, although it is not just poorer pupils who will receive the free laptops: the government has said that those most in need, such as children in care or with learning difficulties, will be prioritised.
The free laptops will complete with a free broadband connection for one year.
