Anyone taking delivery of a free laptop with broadband over the course of 2010 should be careful to stay within filesharing laws, according to a new report.
The Joint Select Committee on Human Rights has said that new rules to punish anyone who uses a free laptop with broadband to engage in illegal filesharing activity 'need clarification' as they could breach the rights of internet users.
Under a proposed bill, free laptop with broadband users could see their internet connections switched off if they are found guilty of 'persistent piracy'.
However, the Committee said that technical measures surrounding the treatment of free laptop with broadband users had not been 'sufficiently specified' and could be unfair.
It also warned that the bill could lead to the introduction of 'over-broad powers' to be used against people who use a free laptop with broadband to swap files with friends.
