As part of the Home Access campaign, hundreds of families across the UK could now be eligible for a free laptops and internet connectivity. The campaign, which was announced in late 2008, was developed to provide free laptops for low-income families in order to encourage the use of technology for learning.
The campaign began with a pilot which issued families with the financial support to purchase one device, connectivity and support and was so successful that the organisation began its national rollout at the beginning of this year, which hopes to provide 270,000 households with a free laptop by early 2011.
"Home Access aims to provide practical and financial support to low-income families who may not be able to afford a computer or the internet,” said Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Schools, Diana Johnson of the free laptop scheme. “We will support these families to ensure that the educational and social benefits of 21st century technology are available to them."
