US show hands out £27,000 of free Dell laptops

Dell laptops have been distributed under a scheme entitled Free Access Neighbourhood (FAN), created by Paul Estridge Jr. during the hit US reality TV series, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

The remarkable Dell laptop donation was made under The Estridge Company’s commitment to sustainable neighbourhood transformation.

The FAN plan provides free wireless internet using Dell laptops to 450 homes in the state of Indianapolis, and is set to go live in June 2009.

The 105 free Dell laptops, worth over £27,000, were distributed to children and their accompanying adults at the FAN Laptop Event.

The Dell laptops provided were Inspiron Mini 9 units, which combine both ease-of-use and advanced technology. It was explained to families how their brand new Dell laptops should be used and maintained, as well as how to access and use study resources for children.

Dell laptops for education

The Dell laptops will not only provides access to the entire internet, but also to the specially created IndyFAN.net web portal. It allows residents access to neighbourhood resources, including health services, education and technology.

The IndyFAN.net web portal is a great starting point, especially for the Indianapolis public school students that the Dell laptops are intended for.

Indianapolis Chief Information Officer Dorothy Crenshaw believes the Dell laptops are a surefire way to expand the school day of children, and keep their learning far more relevant and current than text books ever can. She states that the free Dell laptops “empower the user and increase quality of life for all the family.”
