Charity hopes for festive laptop boost

A charity that provides cheap laptops to not-for-profit organisations is hoping that people who received new models for Christmas will donate their old ones to help those less fortunate than themselves.

London-based Computer Aid International (CAI) has already supplied more than 160,000 cheap laptops and PCs to community projects, hospitals and schools.

It is hoping that people who received new laptops as Christmas presents will again decide to donate their machines to a good cause.

Upon receipt of the laptops, CAI performs a full refurbishment, wiping all of the data from the hard drive and rebuilding it ready to be used again.

The charity says that donating your laptop "could play a key role in enriching education, advancing healthcare and generating employment opportunities across the developing world".

The organisation, which has the approval of the UK government, also lets donors see where their laptops have gone via its 'asset-tracking' technology, giving a real indication of the good they are doing.
