With Apple having finally unveiled the iPad, the machine that will bridge the gap between the iPhone and Apple laptops range, at a star-studded ceremony in San Francisco, reaction to the new unit has started to flood in.

So far, debate is split between iPhone users who see the iPad as a larger extension of their much-loved handset, with all the possibilities that brings, and Apple laptops fans who see the iPad as being little more than an expensive toy.

The company behind the machine will be hoping it represents Apple laptops' first successful entry to the tablet PC market, a field which so far has failed to capture the imagination of users.

It is predicted that the Apple laptops iPad will mostly be used for idle web browsing, as it allows owners to surf the internet in a compact way from the comfort of an armchair.

The true usefulness of the iPad, it seems, will become clear when applications start being released.
